New to ark and curious

I've been playing ark for a week 24/7 and am wondering if I should focus resources to making a fabricated pistol and riot armor. And with that armor a gun should I explore the red tower thing? And what Dino should I attempt to tame for speed and dmg as a beginner? Thanks in advance.
