Just got a detention for using my phone AFTER SCHOOL. I'm done.

So my mom just got out of a kidney transplant at around noon today. Obviously, I wasn't able to call her because I was still in class. At around 3:30 when the bell rung and the day was over, I got to my locker and got my phone. I immediately called my mom to check on her, and while I was just starting to talk, some ugly grumpy ass teacher walked over to me with her eyebrows all tightened and shit. She told me to put away the phone but I had explained to her that it was after school because the bell had already rung and that my mom had just gotten out of a very important surgery. My mom even told her so when I put her on speaker for the teacher to hear.

She didn't give a fuck and walkied the principal over to where we were standing. The principal lectured me for 5 minutes before he walked off. Now, I have detention tomorrow on Tuesday. The teacher said that I was still "on school property," so the rules applied even though the school day was over.

**Relevant Comments (and OOP's response to them)(EDITOR'S NOTE: these comments on the original post were made after OOP posted the update):

0Highlander: I’m really curious what the school handbook says about phones because I doubt it says “no phone use on school property, period”

OOP: I KNOW RIGHT THIS BITCH WAS MAKING HER OWN RULES

ppardee: School is over, which means you can go home, right? So why stand around for 5 minutes listening to anyone lecture you. These clowns have power for one reason - you gave it to them.

If you had ignored her and walked away talking to your mom, what would she have done? Given you super detention?

OOP: It wouldn't be a good look to walk off on the principal. He would probably hate me and put me into trouble and if I got into any problems in the future he would be more critical about me.

Update on my post of the teacher giving detention AFTER SCHOOL for me calling my mom because she got out of surgery.

UPDATE: Hey guys, thanks for the overwhelming support and advice on the original post lol. Sorry for not being able to reply to comments, yesterday was a busy day. Today in second period, I got called to the office and I met a school board member named Mr. Valdez. He was very helpful and told me that not only was I off the detention, but the teacher that reprimanded me had been suspended for a week. I feel good that justice was served and the right outcome eventually came into place.

More relevant comments (and OOP's response to them):

OOP on when the teacher will come back to the school: btw guys the teacher will start her suspension after winter break is over lol

FrogVirus3: What did you do to get the school board involved? I’ve been in a similar situation and most teachers don’t care

OOP: My mom called the school that night and spoke with the front office lady. My mom said that the school was getting into contact with the board and the next day they just called me down into the office.

Tuesday_Patience: Is this in the US? If so, it's very unusual for a school board member to do anything like this. I'm on our school board and I only have ONE employee: the superintendent. If I had been made aware of what happened to you, I would have come down on the superintendent to take care of this and to let me know what happened.

I'm not allowed to have much knowledge about personnel matters for very specific legal reasons: if an employee is fired and they fight termination, it comes to the board. We are like the jury - we hear both sides (from the superintendent and admins and then from the teacher and their representatives) and then decide if the termination is warranted or not. I have to have an independent, objective mindset. So knowing about the issue on the ground level would put EVERYONE in a bad position.

In addition, it is simply not in my power to punish any district employee. Luke I said, I only have one employee - and there are seven of us on the board, none of us can do ANYTHING to the superintendent on our own.

OOP in two different comments: Toronto

*lmao I meant Chicago I typed it in bc I recently went on a trip there

Also it wasn't just him, he told me that he discussed it with the rest of the board as well. He was just the messenger.

Somerset76: This is great! How is your mom doing?

OOP: She's recovering pretty well! I appreciate you for asking.
