Beware of Ola biker scam

Today, while returning home (a 25km distance), I used Ola bikes since it was the cheapest option. I booked the ride, and when the driver arrived, he opened the Rapido app to check the rate and said that Rapido calculates the accurate fare. It showed 250rs, but I had booked it for 200rs, which I informed him about.

As soon as we started, he began complaining about the Ola app, saying distance calculation is buggy and its rates were wrong. He said he would cancel the ride if I paid him a flat 300rs (basically the Rapido amount plus a 50rs tip). He told me he was informing me for my benefit and then gave an example about how he picked up a lady whose app showed 170 INR, but she ended up paying 380 INR. I told him I preferred Ola bikes because the riders don’t haggle like auto drivers.

He was so sure of himself that he proposed a bet. He said if the fare went over the amount I booked, I should tip him 50 INR, but if it didn’t, I wouldn’t have to pay any extra. I was hesitant, but I offered to tip him 15%(initially 10%) of the final fare, which he agreed to after a bit of convincing. I told him if the fare reached 400 INR, he’d get 60 INR as a tip; if it stayed at 200 INR, he’d get 30 INR.

When we were nearing my destination, he started talking about how fast he works and asked me to open the app and be ready to pay. When we reached the destination, he showed me a fare of 380rs and started boasting, saying I should have listened to him and just paid the 300rs flat amount. I wasn’t convinced, so I decided to check the fare in the Ola app.

He started panicking, telling me I couldn't see the correct amount in my app. When I pulled up the fare on the Ola app, he still tried to convince me that the amount he showed was correct. I told him I was going to pay the 200rs as shown in my app, plus the 15% tip.

As I made the payment, he was scrolling through his phone and then tried to look innocent saying he found correct bill now. I just gave a fake laugh and completed the payment. When he was scrolling his phone, I saw what he had done. Instead of showing me the fare for my ride, he had shown his total rides for the day. It displayed 380rs, but after opening the details, I saw there were two separate bills: one for my ride, which was 200rs, and another for 180rs.

TL;DR: An Ola bike driver tried to convince me to cancel the ride and pay a flat amount that benefited me, claiming Ola's distance calculator and rates were inaccurate. He attempted to overcharge me by 100rs.
