black history month and preschool??

hi! so I work at a pre-school that’s attached to a k-8 grade school (same building and ideally the kids that come in ps will stay at the school through 8th grade), and I just wanted to ask a question because my co-teacher and I have been talking about it a bit. So a couple of weeks ago, the director of operations at the school and came in because a parent (anonymously) requested that we do a week on black history. For the record, I really do think it’s great that people want their kids to learn about black history even at such a young age as opposed to the opposite of having parents lose their mind (respectfully) at even the idea of bringing that up. However, it kinda came out of nowhere and the reason my co-teacher and I didn’t already have a week planned out for that already is honestly because neither of us are quite sure how to go about it in a way that both is an accurate representation of what black history month is (or I guess should be) but also in a way that’s appropriate for a 3/4 year old and in a way a way they would be able to understand. Obviously we aren’t planning on going into all of the information that maybe wouldn’t be introduced until elementary school, but we are kind of stuck. The school also wants us to do something on Cinco de Mayo which is one thing but we’re also kinda stuck on a respectful and also kid friendly way to go about that. Also maybe worth noting that other than one Hispanic boy and one Black girl, the class is otherwise all white. So I guess I’m just looking for any kind of feedback- if you’re an ece professional, have you ever done anything for black history month and if so, how did you go about it? Or what are your thoughts on having maybe sensitive topics introduced into your curriculum? And if you’re a parent I’m also interested in knowing what your thoughts are if you have kids around this age! Sorry this was a lot, I really want to go about this the right way and make it a hopefully meaningful learning experience for these kids, but also I’m quite stuck! Thank you all in advance :)))))
