Rebirth. The world looks autogenerated?
((Edit: I've come to the conclusion I am indeed spoiled. My most recently played games are Red dead redemption 2 and Horizon zero dawn. Games with a much longer development cycle. I was used to their attention to detail, fidelity and polish. (In the environment design) Something that is robbing me of experiencing Rebirth properly. It is unfortunate, and I personally would not have minded to wait longer for Rebirth, but it is what it is.))
Or something like that.
I just need to get this out of my head because I can't unsee it and it is bothering me to no end. I am also not talking about the glaringly obvious low texture and model fidelity junk.
The world looks like a hodgepodge. It looks AMAZING when you squint, but absolutely awful when you look at it closer.
I couldn't put my finger on what I was reacting to at first. I felt there was a disconnect in the world sometimes. Mind you, I've only gotten to Chocobo farm so far so I haven't seen all the areas in the game.
Kalm looks really cool. It really felt like "Kalm" to me even with an incredible facelift. But walking around we can see lots of clipping assets and corners that doesn't make sense to me. It brought me out of it. "This door has 1 meter step to get into" stuff like that. But still, it looked carefully crafted into a city. Even though it was giving me "blocking stage" instead of final. The assets could just be a bit too mismatched sometimes. It reminded me more of a cool Skyrim mod where someone has crafted something cool out of existing assets. It looks cool, but it also looks like "a mod".
Then I entered the open world... Once again, looks pretty until you look closer. Except for the mountains and big rock surfaces. They looked so misplaced and ugly to me that I can't stop staring at them with an evil eye. But also the nature in general. Pretty assets, but seemingly looked randomly put together. And again the clipping of the big mako pipes. Didn't even try to hide it. Again it gave me "blocking stage". And the houses in that village. Just felt popped down, not "solid" in the world.
I know that brushes are used to quickly place down threes, rocks and what not in modern engines. So it is to some degree "autogenerated". But look at Horizon Zero Dawn or Red dead redemption 2. That is what I expect of the world from a game with that kind of pricetag as Rebirth.
I didn't get this asset hodgepodge feeling in the first part(intergrade/remake or whatever). But perhaps because it wasn't organic. It was a city or slum, not nature adjacent. Well, except Aerith's home. And it looked fine to me.
Perhaps I am spoiled or have way too high standards. But still, if this was an honest attempt for Square Enix they have a lot to learn, or has lost something on the way. FFXV looked better in this regard to me. I have yet to try XVI. Or SE is just cutting corners for money grab with the remake series. Which I mean... That is how the industry looks right now. Be quick and get cash. And just bunching stuff together without fixing seams is the quickest way...
I'm just very disappointed because it keeps putting me off and distracting me from enjoying the story and characters...
