If you specifically look for films that are highly regarded and which you think you’ll like, it makes sense to have your curve towards the right. There are also so many different genres, eras and styles of cinema, that many films are hard to compare but can still be just as amazing.
Considering that millions of films have been made, it actually makes sense to rate most movies from the top 250 4,5 and 5 stars, considering how tough it is to get on there. I’m not saying you should go out of your way to rate every classic highly if you don’t like it, but instead to not feel guilty about being generous with your ratings.
