Why do the richest people today produce non-essential products, provide non-essential services?

If I brought back highly educated people from ancient history like for example greek philosophers and told them about the concept of Capitalism I bet they would guess richest people/biggest companies would be Energy, Food, Medicine etc. But when I see richest men today they provide what is essentially luxury items and services.
