High school teachers: what about your job do you think is so hard?
This is going to be controversial lol but I read this sentiment all the time on here and so I’m genuinely looking to hear different experiences. I’ve always thought the job was pretty chill, especially compared to the jobs of my friends.
Perks: 1) no daily management checking in or breathing down your neck; no quotas to meet, no one policing your day to day, scheduling meetings with you, asking for a weekly planner… I can go months without talking to my admin if I don’t absolutely need/want to. 2) flexibility and autonomy day to day; woke up feeling like crap? Put a movie on today instead of Friday. Not feeling the short story you planned on teaching? Swap it for one you enjoy. Weather nice today? Do the lesson outside. 3) self imposed deadlines; why do you need to take work home? Can you mark and plan over prep/lunch/downtime in the classroom? A bit before and after school? My teachables all include a lot of essay writing and bigger projects but I time manage to get it done when it gets done. Need a few extra days? return the essays Friday instead of Tuesday. No one is forcing you to return those essays that particular Tuesday! I also map out my students’ work periods which is helpful for me to plan when I’ll be able to do some prep/marking too
I see a lot of teachers doing what seems to be above and beyond and while that’s noble I guess, it’s not required? Why reinvent the wheel or commit to extracurriculars?
