[HELP] Help getting into Walter Whitman?

My uncle as part of my graduation gift gave me a copy of Leaves of Grass. I tried to read it but I had never really read much poetry and because it was so densely worded it was hard for me to dig in. I'm asking for any tips whether poems to read first, resources to help parse through it, or general advice. Thanks!
