Announcement: Megathread rules update and other notices
Two weeks ago we announced some changes to the Wind and Truth megathreading policy: namely that we would start allowing long, detailed, and unique posts.
The main purpose of this post is to announce that we have begun to loosen our stringency on these criteria. Moving forward we will be approving all Wind and Truth posts that have one paragraph of unique content. Practically speaking, we will continue to direct posts to the megathread only if they (1) are very brief or (2) concern a very simple or frequently discussed topic.
We will continue to require ALL Wind and Truth posts to tag WaT in the post title. (in addition to the post flair) This is necessary because spoiler tags don't show on the home page and we don't want people accidentally clicking into a Wind and Truth spoiler post without realizing it.
We are continuing to hold all posts for manual approval as we're still seeing a high volume of posts. The reasons for this include (1) checking for spoilers in post titles, (2) checking for appropriate post flairs, especially for posts with WaT content, (3) affirming that WaT posts have the WaT title tag, and (4) ensuring WaT posts meet the requirements above regarding content. Thank you all for your patience as things get approved slower than usual.
One note on spoilers in post titles. We strive to seek a balance of not allowing spoilers while also not being so restrictive that titles are effectively meaningless. We have seen some complaints about spoilers in post titles. On one hand, we're trying to be more diligent about this. At the same time, as we begin approving posts at a higher rate, there are likely to be more post titles which some people find spoilery. We have two things to say on this topic:
- If you see a post title which you strongly feel is a spoiler (especially if you haven't finished the new book) we encourage you to contact the moderators in addition to reporting the post. Sometimes a moderator may see a report and re-approve the post because they don't see the issue. Helping us understand your perspective might help!
- That said, please be aware that we are looking for a balance that works for most users. If you constantly feel that you are seeing spoilery post titles (and you are still reading the book), it is likely that our policy is simply more loose than your personal preferences. If that's you, we encourage you to avoid the subreddit until you have finished the book. We want you to enjoy the book. We will be here when you are done!
If you have opinions on how we're managing things, feel free to let us know in the comments below or by contacting us privately. The feedback is valuable. As always, we will be doing a "Wind and Truth Post-Release Survey" when things are winding down. (perhaps at the 2 or 3 month mark after release) We do this so that we can more formally solicit feedback that will inform how we manage things next time. (Isles of the Emberdark and beyond)
