am I on the right track

so a year ago I started tattooing for a guy who basically told us we didn’t need to know how to draw to tattoo and just had us using Pinterest designs. fast forward a year later since I’ve learned a lot, I feel that is disrespectful to the craft and ripping off other’s artwork is not what I want to do. I love tattooing so should I take some time to actually learn to draw and get a REAL apprenticeship? or can you truly be an artist without knowing how to draw a bunch ?
