Jesus and Mariana’s Relationship

Rewatching the series for the first time since it aired, and I’m currently on s4e12. I just watched Jesus in his coma dream where he’s haunted by his inability to “save” Mariana, and it’s reminding me of a problem I’ve had with the way Jesus has been depicted for the whole series. The show really tries to push this idea that Jesus is this caring protective brother to Mariana, and while there have been instances where that is true, I feel that much more often he’s being disrespectful and cruel to her. For example, he:

dates her best friend behind her back and then calls her a jealous, selfish, loser when she feels bad about it

Makes fun of her for being a virgin

Starts hooking up with her new best friend after Lexi leaves

Laughed along with Nick when he was recklessly speeding with Mariana and Lexi in the car and clearly causing Mariana to panic due to the car crash they just recently survived, and told Mariana she was being dramatic

And many other moments of him being inconsiderate of her throughout the show that I can’t remember.

I know there are a couple moments where he’s really there for her, but I feel like the show cuts him a LOT of slack for the way he’s treated her and it frustrates me, cuz anytime Mariana makes a mistake I feel like she gets humiliated and has to repent, but Jesus gets this kind of veil of protection from the writers for allegedly being this protective brother when in reality he’s not.
