What’s the point of knockdown shields

My knock down shield doesn’t ever work. If I get knocked I just get thirsted like I’m not even using it no matter what level I have. I had a purple knock and got 2 shotted by a mastiff form 15-20 feet out. But I fight against people who use them and they tank all the damage. Why. What’s going on.
