How would you describe a Murakami book to someone who's never heard of him before?
I've gotten pretty into Murakami, and one challenge I always face is responding when someone (inevitably) asks me: "What's the book about?"
I freeze. I can't just say "a boy who ran away from home to a library," "a guy who's catching up with his friends," or what I'm currently reading: "A man who's looking for a cat and his wife." Each book has a beginning plot, and then branches out (and ends) somewhere completely different, making the original plot essentially irrelevant.
So I end up saying "He has a very surreal writing style" and I leave it at that. And they probably think I'm stupid because I'm halfway into a 600 page book and can't describe what's going on.
So yea, how would you respond if someone asked you about the plot of one of his books? Keep it vague? Try to Explain?
