Meet Achile Chatouilleu, also known as “The French Tickler”, the 107 year old embalmed clown.
When he died in 1912, Achile's last wishes were to be embalmed and displayed in his favourite clown makeup. His family carried out these wishes, dressing him in his Shriners parade outfit from the first Shriners parade in 1906, and applying his makeup. Achile was one of the last bodies to be gravity embalmed - meaning the body was strapped to a table which was angled to allow chemicals to flow in while blood drained out.
However, he was rarely ever seen by anyone, since he was stored at a circus ranch house which his family visited infrequently. In 1996, a family member decided to give Achile's body to the California Institute of Abnormal Arts, so he could be visited and seen more often. He is housed behind a panel of glass, since he was embalmed with very toxic chemicals such as mercury and arsenic, but he can still be viewed today.
