What fragrance do you dislike based solely on bottle design?
As much as we'd like to think of ourselves as purists that are able to judge scents on their olfactory merits alone, it's not a secret that we fall prey to marketing, status, book cover appeal, artistic design, aesthetics etc.. myself included.
So i'm curious, and more broadly speaking, which fragrances do you have a bias against because of the way the bottle looks?
This isn't the same as "what is the worst designed bottles", because i'd submit that a fragrance can be so stellar, that it dwarfs any other considerations, but yeah, you get the point! I'll start
***Most of Jean Paul Gaultier frags:*** Yes, despite having some of the most consistently positive reviews, I now can't shake the bias that these bottles look like they should be sold at a gift shop or an afterthought fragrance at PacSun or something. And because of that, I interpret the fragrances as a bit too sophomoric or designated for high schoolers or even cheap and unrefined. Not knocking high schoolers, but it's not my scene. I wish the bottle design was more classical, i'm sure Le Male Le Parfum would be much higher in my rankings, and i'd likely appreciate the complex and sophisticated aspects of the frag.
***Another is Rabanne 1 Million, phantom, and (to a lesser extent) Invictus line:*** For similar reasons. Except i picture someone who spent their entire paycheck on a gucci outfit, who larps as a wealthy person would gravitate towards the 1 million frag. And the other two are again seeming to appeal to high school crowd. And therefore I interpret the scent with a bias.
***In the opposite direction, Tom Ford:*** I see the design, and i think it's absolutely elegant and mature looking, I therefore have more patience and respect when i smell these frags, even though many aren't really in my scope of favorite scents, but yeah
***Creed (a little):*** This bottle looks like it would be in a Buckle store, and not a high price, niche powerhouse, but i'm mostly over this bias haha.
Feel free to downvote me, but i'm being transparent with my character flaws. I'm sure there's more, but i'd love to get a pulse of how y'all interface with the frag hobby. I'm moreso interested in how the mind works, as opposed to shaming. It's a reflection of my own cognitive filters/issues, not an objective proclamation of how people or the frag world should change..
