Buying a home

Single mom who works in DC. Thinking of buying a home in the area, currently I rent in Alexandria and it is expensive! I want a single family home and prefer new built! I will be using my VA loan so hopefully can get a good rate. Give me pros and cons of the area? I can pay about 3K a month , prefer a 3 bedroom.

Is it safe ? Are the schools good?( I have a middle schooler and a high schooler), what areas should I look at?

Also how is traffic to DC? Are metro and bus accessible easily?

My biggest concern is the community. So please share your opinion of living in the area! Thanks!
