What are raised bottom plant pots made for?
Hi Reddit, I was watering my plants yesterday and wondered about the purpose of these raised bottoms on plant pots. The one I use are actually marketed for orchids (the transparent pots) because I like to check on the roots. I have mainly tropical plants (aroids and hoyas represent 80% of my collection) in chunky mixes or at least substrates known to provide airflow and drain well.
On the last picture I filled the planter with ~1cm water and the drainage holes in the middle where above. Could these raised bottom provide a kind of self watering feature? I'm not sure if I should live this amount of water inside or if I would overwater my plants doing that? Somehow it reminded me of the self watering pots from Plantscraper for example and I'm very curious about it now! :)
Thank you for your feedbacks!
