Belongings from a Former Employer

Do I have any recourse for recovering belongings from a former employer?

They threaten to call the police if i attend to retrieve them, yet they refuse to pack them up and send them to me.

How is what they're doing any less illegal than showing up peacefully to collect what is mine? Would what they're doing constitute theft?
