Folks that usually travel abroad during winter season, how do you choose your outfit?

Hey everyone! I'm heading to Japan by the end of the year and coming back after New Year's. Since Tokyo will be in winter mode, I'm a bit lost on what jackets or outfits to pick up. Any suggestions? I'd really appreciate it!
