My neurologist visit - naproxen as preventative and being told I should never have taken triptans
EDIT: I am only being prescribed naproxen the week before my period, not daily!! This wasn’t clear enough in my original post.
— If anyone can relate, or provide feedback on what has been recommended please do tell!
I saw a neuro for the first time since 2018. I have Migraine with Aura (complex migraine).
When I first started getting migraines around age 13 I was prescribed sumatriptan. HATED the side effects and it made my auras feel worse. I was prescribed rizatriptan later on in my early 20s, I don’t even think I tried it because I remember hating the first triptan. I pretty much relied on ibuprofen and Tylenol until I got a new PCP who had me try ubrelvy. I haven’t turned back (and I actually think ibuprofen gives me rebounds now 🥲)
Anyways this new neuro I saw a couple of weeks ago was shocked when i told him i was prescribed those triptans. He said “with your migraines you should NEVER have been on those triptans. They are dangerous to take with aura”.
Now I WAS SHOCKED! because I know so many people (on this subreddit too), that rely on triptans so much.
Doc wants me to try nurtec eventually, but we are experimenting with daily naproxen first. I’m directed to only take the naproxen the week before my period. Most of my migraines I THINK are triggered by my period, and tend to happen the week before when estrogen levels drop. So he wants me to try the naproxen, and if migraines don’t change, he wants me to try nurtec instead. He’s only pushing for nurtec because if it works for me, it can be used daily, whereas ubrelvy cannot.
My migraine days are about 2-4 per month, changing with stress levels and weather (I live in the northeast and my migraines are horrific in August 🙃)
Has anyone heard these things from a doc as well? Or tried the daily naproxen? To be honest I haven’t been taking the naproxen as frequently as he prescribed because I’m scared of more rebounds or liver / stomach damage. Migraineurs take so many meds, I feel we’re always worried about our stomach lining 😭
