Which artists benefited by lack of competition in the industry or their genre?
I was thinking how how sparse the covid-19 years were with music and the songs that managed to burst through the silence. Obviously tiktok was in full swing at that point but there were a few songs that likely garnered more attention due to the lack of competition.
This is back in 2019 but IMO "Sweet But Psycho" by Ava Max is a strong example. A pretty good pop song but would have been smothered by pop heavyweights if put against them. Luckily for Ava though the whole Billie Eilish and Lil Nas X era focused on downtempo or genre-mashing hits whereas "Sweet but Psycho" is a straight pop song with a catchy hook. Obviously pop existed during that summer but it was transitioning or being influenced by the hiphop dominated landscape.
What are some other artists and songs that benefited from the lack of competition?
