looking for a new RPG home

hi there, i'm still looking for a new RPG to run to call my own.

I'm a longterm Palladium player, (please leave consoling remarks at the door), and am tired of years of homebrew to get anything done. I've been experimenting with Cypher, and love parts of it, but it feels like its not deep enough to really work.

I love rolling for defense in combat, especially when you can do things like defensively throw them, or deal damage back. I love combat being more of the choices you make than 'I move five feet to get advantage, and attack twice'

It just doesn't feel involved to me in any edition of D&D.

For Cypher I outright adore the way you can create characters, especially how they have a chatGPT trained to help create new focuses. That's just amazing.

That said, as I mentioned, my players seem at a loss because they don't know what they can and cannot do in it so far. We need a lot of work before we can really decide what to play. I have to be ready to move on if Cypher isn't the solution for us.

What I want most of all is a game that I can play any genre in if possible, one that has more to combat than a tactical/wargaming edge to it, and has enough options to it to make it interesting.

I've gotten a few pushbacks from my players from player facing rolls and static damage, and I don't have any interest in a pbta game.

If you have any thoughts, please let me know, (I know one person will suggest GURPS, lol :) )

Thank you for reading.
