The amount of people that will engage with a post without reading it.

Either: 1.) They are only reading the title and then commenting. 2.) They need to brush up on their skimming skills. Or 3.) Their comprehension is truly appalling.

Because what in the world.

The amount of posts I’ve read that have comments that are missing the point entirely, is truly disturbing.

Depending in the sub Reddit, Reddit is basically a discussion board. The OP posts a view or prompt and the users discuss that prompt. However, the majority of the time OP is just reiterating what their post meant because the comments are focusing on the most arbitrary part of the post, if what they’re focusing on, has to do with the post at all.

For example:

  • My Post: Criticizing the language used for criminals, and how that affects us in other ways.

Basically calling criminals ‘monsters’ dehumanizes them and making it easier to view their actions as something ‘alien or other’, which makes it harder to equate/see those actions within normal contexts.

  • The comments: “CrIMiNals are bad duh” “So criminals aren’t bad now?” “So what if they raped someone, that’s okay?”

Cut to me repeatedly saying “what!? Where did you even get that?” And then stating my point 50-11 different ways. Which means I only had one actual conversation on the topic and that wasn’t even really on the topic either.

It takes away from actual conversation that could be had. I find it very annoying. It’s basically every post too. I rarely see comments that don’t miss the point entirely.

  • There is another example about this person that posted a long story about their bfs mother talking about a bag they got him. Basically the mother was making fun of the gf for being nonbinary. The comments missed the point entirely and were just yelling at OP for being mad about a name of a bag. They couldn’t have read the post if that was their take.
