Is a consumer wifi router a sufficient firewall?
I'm making a little indie online game, and I'm considering hosting the server myself. However, I'm a bit nervous about giving the Internet at large even a small reason to pay extra attention to my home IP address.
I've got a typical Asus wifi router with its typical built-in firewall. Would that likely be sufficient to keep my home network safe? Or would I be better off putting in a low-end firewall appliance? (Thinking maybe a MikroTik or Ubiquiti.) My budget is tight, so I'd prefer not to spend on anything I don't really need.
Thanks!
Edit: I have a business fiber connection, so it should be fine for a tiny-traffic game. In the unlikely event that it became popular, I'd move it to proper host.
Conclusion: It seems like the general consensus is that the most important consideration would be to separate the server from my private network, so that if the server is compromised they can't reach my personal data. Which my consumer wifi router cannot do. Thank you for the pile of rapid replies!
