Machine needles

I needed some #14 needles for some heavy cotton (like a drapery canvas) fabric. It's thick, upholstery-style fabric, but not a super dense weave. #14's are perfect for the weight. I've made 7 aprons so far, and wanted to change needles to a fresh one. Other folks use this machine, (it's in a community maker space I belong to) so it's probably gotten at least 30hrs of sewing with this needle.

I went into my local sewing supply (Michael's is a little far, and their inventory is iffy) and the owner was pushing these "stretch fabric" needles on me, telling me that they are truly universal and it's the only style he ever gets because they can literally sew any style of fabric. He had every size, and multiple brands, ALL labeled that they were for stretch fabric.

I'm not sure I trust that statement. I explained my heavy, canvas-like fabric, and he told me the needles are pointy enough and will be just fine.

I DO have some heavy cotton stretch that I can use these for eventually, so I got them anyway (they were cheap), but I'd like to hear opinions on whether these needles are "universal". I certainly wouldn't use them on vinyl.

Should I make the 40 min trip to Michael's for some "pointed" needles for my aprons?
