Is inefficiency as prominent as I experience it in large organizations?

This post primarily targets S&P1000 or other organizations in the multi billion class in manufacturing, finance, or public sector.

I work in ITOM and this exposes me to just about every aspect of IT in these large organizations.

Most of the time these things are what I see:

  • Antiquated processes, if processes exist at all.
  • Little or NO automation.
  • Outsourcing to India which is so damn inefficient that it takes weeks or months to even get a VM spun up.
  • Little or knowledge about the in house infrastructure. E.g. subnet information stored in excel sheets or IPAM solutions so shit that you wish it was in a decent excel sheet.
  • Anything not commonly ordered, nobody has any idea who can do that thing for you. I.e. you end up chasing people all the time to get shit done.
  • Word document "form" galore. - Fill out this word document to submit your request
  • Little or no understanding of which applications exist in the organization
  • Definitely no understanding of what services the applications deliver

In other words, my experience when I enter a project is that nobody knows anything and nobody knows who to ask, nor where to look for the information needed.
