Genuine question: Where do you fall in the spectrum of being a super frugal saver to a heavy spender?
Long time listener of WCI and physician with 2 kids. I’ve heard and met physicians who are saving the vast majority of their income with the idea of “I can really enjoy life and spend for luxuries once I have a 7 figure net worth and have been working for a decade or more”. I’ve also heard and met physicians who are debt free but spend most of their income on all the things WCI generally says to avoid (super expensive cars, multiple luxury vacations, big house etc).
I personally believe it is important to be debt free, have a 3 month emergency fund, max out tax-advantaged accounts, and build up a brokerage account. After that, I don’t think there is anything wrong to use all the left over money (if you’ve paid off your student loan and debts) to buy the fancy car and fancy house and fancy vacations. I am against credit card debt so I wouldn’t purchase anything that I couldn’t pay off very quickly.
What are your thoughts? I’ve heard push back from docs in their 50s and 60s that you should work hard and save hard and then really splurge after 15-20 years in practice. I think that’s extreme. Anything can happen, we aren’t guaranteed to live beyond 65 or even 50. Many of us won’t care or may not be able to do the things we enjoy now once we reach that age either. Do you think it’s ok for a younger physician with 2 kids to spend on luxuries if they are doing all of the things listed in my previous paragraph?
