Which childcare option would you choose?

Hi all! I’d love to hear opinions from other working women who have dealt with these types of childcare decisions. I just had my first baby in October. I will be returning to office at the beginning of March when she is just shy of 5 months old and I’m trying to figure out what we will do for childcare.

About my job: I work in office 4 days a week from 9-5. I set my own schedule including meetings and calls, for the most part. My job is very flexible and allows me to be in and out of the office as needed.

I have two options for childcare and I am struggling to decide what to do.

Option A: Daycare. We have a daycare facility in our building. The daycare has an “open door” policy. Parents can come in at any time and be with their child. Breastfeeding mothers are invited to come feed their baby during the day.

Option B: In home childcare - my mom would watch her two days a week and we’d hire a nanny for the other two days. The benefit of this would be more individualized care, familiar environment and a stricter adherence to the routines we have established.

Despite the benefits of having Grammy and a nanny, I am leaning toward Option A. I absolutely love breastfeeding and that has been one of the most difficult things to wrap my head around with going back to work. I love that I’d still be able to go in and hold my daughter and feed her during the day. Plus, being in my building, I’ll feel like she’s with me at work. However, I do have concerns. I know she’ll be bringing illnesses home from daycare. I also worry about her ability to nap there. If she misses daytime naps, her night is usually pretty rough. She’s used to a very dark room and white noise, which will not be the setup at daycare. Paying a nanny two days a week will also be less expensive for us than full time daycare.

So, what would you do in my shoes? Has anyone here faced a similar situation? Anyone regret their decision to keep baby home? Or their decision to send them to daycare?
