A good general rule is to never hand your phone over to anyone except for people close to you that you explicitly trust. No one with a legitimate purpose will ask for your phone in public. My guess is that you have learned this lesson.

I hear you, but I have to push back a bit. I actually have this book that mentioned this exact scam and it's amazing that I encountered it myself. It talks about it and it's been a great guide for other things to look out for in real life and not just online. I got it from work as a reference. Unfortunately I didn't get to that chapter yet. But I wouldn't say you NEVER hand your phone to someone in public. Because I again reference if you are in the Apple store and you have a problem with your IPhone. You would of course hand your phone to the Apple employee. There are occasions when you would hand your phone over.
