Sarah Goodridge, an accomplished miniaturist, sent a sensual self-portrait to U.S. senator Daniel Webster in 1828, shortly after the death of his wife. Painted on a small ivory plate, this intimate gesture is often cited as one of the earliest known examples of "sending nudes."
